Challenge Cup History
The Challenge Cup, one of the great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize
money, was first contested in 2007 and will be played for the 3rd time in October 2009. The
origin of the idea to stage amateur matches between the best Virginia and Louisiana AGT
Members is a contest unlike any other on the Amateur Golf Tour.

Regardless of who takes credit, the first matches were played in 2007 at Shipyard GC, in Hilton
Head, SC. Louisiana Team Captain, Eric Simmons selected his team of 20 players that year to
battle the 20 Man Team from Virginia.  Louisiana came out on top 17 to 13, after the complete
36-hole event was played over one day.

The first VA Team was captained by Lyle Joyner, a charter Member of The TAGT. In 2007, the
Virginia Team was complete with 20 players.  Some of the Key Players in 2007 included, Bobby
Rountree (2-0-0), Mike Wren (2-0-0) and Kimber Extine (2-0-0) who all played really well during
the Challenge Cup.

During the Second Challenge Cup the Louisiana Tour once again started out with a Day 1 Lead
during the Four-Ball matches.  They continue to show success in the Four-Ball Matches.
However, at the end of the 2008 VALA Challenge Cup, Team Virginia had won 32-29.  It was a
story unlike any other, to see the amount of players on the 18th green to watch the final match.

Challenge Cup Format Changes
From the beginning of the Challenge through 2007, the competition was comprised of Fourball
matches and singles matches per flight.

The format has changed for 2009, to provide Foursomes, (Alternate Shote). In 2009, foursome
(alternate shot) matches were added for the first time, boosting the total number of points
available to 100.

In 2009, the Challenge Cup will take place over two days (Wednesday and Thursday).  With 36
Holes played on Wednesday, Fourball Morning Matches and Foursome Afternoon Matches.
The Challenge Cup will conclude with 50 Singles Matches on Thursday.
