D’ORSO wins the PALMER Chase Cup
October 5, 2008

CHESAPEAKE, Virginia (TAGT) – Norfolk’s Mike D’Orso went into the
final 2008 Tidewater Amateur Golf Tour tournament leading last year’s
2007 Chase Cup Champion Ron Horte by 50 points.  With another five
players in hot pursuit to win both the tournament and Chase Cup all in
one weekend, the competition could not have been closer.  Neither D’
Orso or Horte could afford to risk a single dropped shot through the
weekend.  After posting 89 in the first round at Cahoon Plantation on
Saturday D’Orso trailed Horte’s solid round of 85 by 4-shots.  But D’Orso’s
score included turn-around nines of 50-39 for his 89 and there are no
better examples of a tour player collecting himself and regrouping on the
back nine to remain into contention for the tournament and the Cup.

Last year’s winner Ron Horte made a superb run at tracking down the
leaders throughout the Chase Cup playoffs.  After the points reset at the
start of the Chase, Horte found himself in 8th place.  His consistent
scoring enabled him to climb the ladder in each event, starting from 8th
to 6th, 4th and finally 2nd place going into the Local Finals at Cahoon.
In the end his attempt to come from behind to defend his 2007 title fell
just three-strokes short of back-to-back Chase Cup titles.

At the start of the 2008 Tour season D’Orso made it a personal goal to
challenge for the Chase Cup and to represent the Virginia Tour in the
VALA Challenge Cup Matches at Hilton Head.  Well Mike, you have two
check-marks down now, so let’s bring home that VALA Challenge Cup!
(editor’s note: Mike D’Orso has also volunteered to a write a story about the
trip to Hilton Head for our Tour Newspaper to come out in late
November).

This year even though Mike D’Orso won the C-Flight Points Championship
and Palmer Cup, it was apparent that Mike Wren made big changes to his
game that led to significant improvement during the middle of the year.
From mid-season onward, Wren’s revamped game climbed the leader
board and enabled him to round out the Top-3 in the final C-Flight points
standings.

Congrats Mike D’Orso on your 2008 Chase Cup Championship, and to Ron
Horte and Mike Wren for solid play on the 2008 Tour!
