SCEARCE wins the CHASE CUP on
the 2nd PLAYOFF HOLE
October 5, 2008

CHESAPEAKE, Virginia (TAGT) – Suffolk’s David Scearce II missed
some early tournaments in 2008 due to surgery and recuperation.  Even
when able to play during the early months of the 2008 season he wasn’t
able to perform at full ability.  It wasn’t until June that two third-place
finishes that he was able to start a steady push towards the Top 10.  With
two more Tour Major events before the Local Finals, Scearce’s
performance in each was critical.  He tied for 5th at the Virginia Amateur
Championship at Golden Horseshoe  and tied for 2nd at the Tour Open
held at Kiskiack.  He backed up those performances by placing 2nd at
Virginia Beach National and 1st at Heron Ridge where he shot 71; the
lowest A-Flight score of the season.

Heading into the Local Finals at Cahoon Plantation, Scearce’s charge
towards the top suffered a setback with an 86 at Nansemond River; only
good enough for 15th place.  Heading into the Local Finals event
Scearce was in sixth place in A- flight.  With the winner’s point share of
1350 points at Cahoon Plantation, the most of any tour event in 2008, it
remained mathematically possible for Scearce to win the Chase Cup.  But
, in order to capture the Chase Cup Scearce needed to win the Local
Finals at Cahoon and hope for some help along the way.  Once the first
round scores posted, he was three-strokes back of the leader.

“He played really well on Sunday and wanted to make a move”, said Tour
Director-Lyle Joyner.

As the dust settled his 77 on Sunday was one of two rounds in the 70’s all
weekend in the A-Flight.  The other was a 76 by John Hansbarger, and the
two found themselves locked in a sudden-death playoff to determine who
would win the event and take the 2008 A-Flight Chase Cup.  With a gallery
in tow, the two dueled for two holes before an un-characteristic error by
Hansbarger required him to make a tough 16 foot downhill slider on the
second sudden-death hole.  When Hansbarger’s putt narrowly slid by, he
was the first to Congratulate Scearce on a well-played comeback victory.

Congrats Dave on your Chase Cup Championship!
