GALLAGHER adds to honors with TAGT Tour player of the year award
By Lyle Joyner, AGTVA.NET
The big man from Yorktown, VA left no doubt this
year. Jim Gallagher, who won a record 11 times
on the Tidewater Tour in 2009, set Tour and
National Records with his victories.
The award that is voted on by the Tour Members
was given out at this year’s Tour Award’s
Banquet. Gallagher received a standing ovation
at this year’s banquet. Other nominees for the
award included: Dan Madson, Glen Sweitzer,
Brian Layne, and Rafael Clemente.
Gallagher started the 2009 Tour Season winning
the first two events played at Kilmarlic Golf Club
and Nansemond River. He would follow two
victories up with a Runner-up finish at Oceana on
the Hornet Course. Going into May, Gallagher
was on a roll with two victories and one second
place finish. At Heron Ridge, Gallagher recorded
a 71 for yet another Tidewater Tour victory, his
third of the season. The next event was the
Tidewater Masters and another victory for
Gallagher. He would later say it was his favorite
event played all year.
At the Open Championship played at Kiskiack Golf Club, Gallagher would record a 9th place finish and then turn on the jets for the rest of 2009. Gallagher would
roll off seven victories in the next eight Tidewater Tournaments, including three of the four Chase Cup Playoff Tournaments.
During his last ten rounds played on the Tidewater Tour in 2009, Gallagher maintained a 71.3 scoring average. That average included six rounds of par or better,
two of which were 68’s at Kingsmill Plantation Course and Red Wing Golf Course.
Now, it’s clear why a player like Jim Gallagher was awarded the annual TAGT Tour player of the year award for 2009. However,
Gallagher will be missed at the start of the 2010 Tour Season as he recovers from an ACL injury. The injury took place a day
before Gallagher was to ride with fellow Tour Members Ron Sullins and Brian Jeltema to Hilton Head, SC for the Amateur Golf
Tour Championship in October.
I was talking with Jim a few days ago and asked him how he was feeling, his response “So, so, and after my knee gave way
on the stairs it was rough” said Gallagher. Knowing Jim over the past few year’s has given me a greater understanding of the
game of golf. It’s not just a game, it’s not just for fun, but it’s about passion. Jim Gallagher has that passion.
