FROM CAPTAIN PATRICK SMITH,

When I first received a call from Lyle Joyner that I have been
seriously considered to captain the Virginia team in the fourth
annual Challenge Cup competition, I was flooded with all sorts
of emotions.  I was, and still am, ecstatic to be part of the team,
honored to be asked to lead the team, humbled that team
members recommended me, and scared because I am new at
this.  I was reluctant to accept the position because I wasn’t
sure if I were the right person to lead the team or if Lyle had meant Assistant Captain or
some other position.  He reiterated that I will be the Captain, he expressed his and
other team members’ confidence in me, and he assured me that I will have plenty of
help with assistant captains.  Since Lyle will be focused on playing his matches, he did
offer to be a technical advisor.

I agonized over the decision because even though I would be part of the team, I would
not be a playing member.  I am so proud that I have graduated to C Flight this year but I
was a little disappointed that I didn’t make the team on my own merit.  Then again, I
knew my chances of making the team were going to be slim.  Competition was tight,
the courses were tough, and everyone in C Flight, and I mean everyone, was fighting to
qualify for the Challenge Cup.  I decided to accept the Captaincy because I wanted to
be part of the team.  I wanted to contribute to win back the Challenge Cup.  And
selfishly, I wanted to reconnect with some great competitors from Louisiana such as
Rodney Sharber, Dave and Daryl Taylor, Robert Gilbert, and even Chuck Autry, just to
name a few.

Winning back the Challenge Cup is very important to every Virginia team member, as
well as players on the Tidewater Amateur Golf Tour.  Bragging rights aside, it
represents the accomplishments of our tour members and the pride we have of our
tour.  Throughout the season, the competition in all flights has been tremendous.
Veterans of the Challenge Cup have talked it up since the start of the season.  Almost
every player has been working hard towards qualifying for the team.  This year, 30% of
our team members are rookies.  That’s just a testament of how much our tour
members wanted to be part of the Challenge Cup team.  With the quality of players and
the return of Jim Gallagher and Kimber Extine, who missed the 2009 competition for
various reasons, Team Virginia will be a force to be reckoned with.  To paraphrase the
great Ben Crenshaw, “I have a good feeling about” this year’s team.

As a past player of the Challenge Cup, I have always enjoyed the competition with my
fellow opponents and new friends from Louisiana win or lose.  As a Captain, I am
looking forward to leading Virginia to victory over a very formidable team.  I’m hoping to
steal a page from Paul Azinger and Ben Crenshaw’s playbook.  I am looking forward to
matching wits and strategy and making the better calls against Eric Simmons.  I have a
lot of respect for Eric and the team he brings to Hilton Head.  Every year, he has
brought a strong Louisiana team for the Challenge Cup and Virginia always seems
like the underdog.  This year is no different when you look at the statistics.  But it’s a
new year, it’s a new team, and we have a new Captain.  I always like being the
“underdog” because like 2008, victory will be that much sweeter.
