I’d like to extend an invitation to join the “Tidewater Amateur Golf Tour Association”. TAGTA is completely separate from the Tidewater Golfweek
Amateur Tour, although most of our members play on the tour and we use the Tour’s PayPal site to collect annual dues, you can be a member of
the TAGTA without being a member of the Golfweek Amateur Tour. TAGTA is chartered under the Virginia State Golf Association as a non-green-
grass “Recreational Golfers’ Club”. We are a “golf club” in every sense except that we are internet based and do not have a course or a physical
facility. Our purpose is to establish and maintain an organization for the betterment of golf competition in the Tidewater area; to promote and
conserve the best interests and true spirit of the game of golf as embodied in its ancient and honorable traditions; encourage conformance to the
USGA Rules of Golf; and to promote equitable competition through a uniform system of handicapping as set forth in the USGA Handicap System
and issue USGA Handicap Indexes, administered by the VSGA, to our members.
Membership in the TAGTA runs from January through December and cost $25, which includes membership in the Virginia State Golf Association
(VSGA); receipt of “Virginia Golfer” magazine; and access to the GHIN system to maintain a USGA handicap. By virtue of being a “club”, we are
also eligible to enter a team in the VSGA State Cub Team Championship held every year.
As many of you are aware, our association had a very successful year in 2011. Our 41 active members included a former VSGA Public Links
Champion, two current and two former Golfweek Amateur Tour National Champions, the 2011 Sleepy Hole Amateur Champion, and numerous local
event winners. We answered eleven requests for handicap verification for players entering formal USGA, VSGA and national events. In October
we were selected as one of four Internet-based “non-green-grass” associations to be audited by the USGA. We passed with the highest rating with
no discrepancies. Upon attending the USGA handicapping refresher course in December I found that the handicapping course instructors have
been using us as the model program for non-green-grass associations.
Our Handicap Committee takes its role seriously. All of our committee members have taken the USGA on-line handicapping course and passed
the USGA test, with results confirmed by the VSGA. Our Committee Chairman has taken two USGA handicapping courses and tests in person.
We adhere to all USGA handicapping rules and policies.
If you are serious about golf, want to establish or keep your USGA handicap, and would like to get Virginia Golfer magazine, TAGTA is the best
deal in the state!
